みたか都市観光協会のインターンシップの一環で、留学生のスーさんとエミリーさんのお二人に日本の文化を体験してもらいました。
協力してくださったのは「関口十一畳店」さんです。
カラフルな畳やくまモンのパネルが店頭に並び、お子様の絵本スペースもあります。
畳作りを体験する前に、まず畳表替えの工程を見せていただきました。
作業のほとんどを熟練の畳職人が一つ一つ丁寧に仕上げます。
年末の繁忙期には、なんと一日100畳分の作業をすることもあるそうです。
実際に、古い畳縁をはがす作業に挑戦しましたが、これがなかなか難しい！
一通り見学させていただいた後、ミニ畳作りにも挑戦しました。
初めて使う道具に四苦八苦しながらも、丁寧なご指導のおかげで形になりました。

My Tatami Making Experience!

Today, we went to the Sekiguchi Jyuu Ichi Tatami Shop! Hiro san greeted us warmly at the entrance and led us inside the shop. We were overwhelmed by the fresh smell of the tatami mats! The first machine we observed sewed the tatami onto the mat. It was really cool to see how fast the machine could sew! The second machine we saw sewed the “eri” onto the mat. The “eri” is the pretty fabric that is sewn onto the edges of the tatami mat. The third machine was definitely my favorite machine. It sewed the eri onto both sides of the mat. In order to do that, it spun the mat around! Afterwards, we walked outside to start on making our own mini tatami mat!
今日、私たちは関口十一畳店に行きました。ヒロさんはお店の前で私たちにあいさつをして、お店の中を案内してくれました。
畳のフレッシュなにおいが凄かったです。
最初の機械は、畳をマットの上に縫い付けます。その機械はとても速くてびっくりしました。二番目の機械は、襟をマットに縫い付けます。襟はとてもきれいな生地で、畳の縁（ふち）に縫い付けます。三番目の機械は私たちの一番のお気に入りです。その機械は襟をマットの両側に縫い付けます。マットを回転させるのも自動です。
そのあと、私たちは外に出て、自分用の小さい畳マットを作り始めました。
Hiro san had all the materials for us prepared such as the tatami, mat, staples, and tape. He even let us pick our own eri! Since we cannot sew the tatami onto the thick mat, we used tape and staples instead. The staple was very loud and surprised us! It required a lot of power and precision, so be careful! The tatami mat making took about 10 minutes. All the effort we put into making the mat really made us appreciate the hard work that is put into making tatami mats.
ヒロさんは、材料を全部用意してくれました。私たちは自分で襟を選びました。
私たちは畳を（機械のように）裁縫できないので、テープとホッチキスを使いました。そのホッチキスはとても大きな音がするのでびっくりしました。力を入れて丁寧にやらないといけないので、注意が必要です。
畳マットを作るのに10分くらい時間がかかりました。畳マットを作るためにはたくさんの努力が必要で、私たちは畳作りに感謝をしました。
Overall, we had a lot of fun at the tatami shop! We definitely recommend everyone to stop by the Sekiguchi Jyuu Ichi Tatami Shop and make your own tatami mat! Also, check out the gacha gacha machine to get a unique hair piece!
畳店の見学はとても楽しかったです。ぜひ関口十一畳店を訪れて、自分の畳マットを作ってください。
